Tonight marks an historic moment for Viola Davis as she becomes the 18th person to achieve EGOT status. EGOT stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, and Davis is the third person to have achieved this honor in the last four years. Davis is now one of a select few who have won all four of these prestigious awards, joining the likes of John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, Mel Brooks, Audrey Hepburn, and Rita Moreno.

Viola Davis has two Tonys, one for King Hedly II and one for the revival of Fences. She earned her Emmy for her role in How To Get Away With Murder, and her Oscar for the film adaptation of Fences in 2016. She is also the first Black actor to have won acting’s “Triple Crown”, getting an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony.

Davis’ next project will be a Peacemaker spin-off about Amanda Waller, which is sure to showcase her range. It is also interesting to note that all living EGOT winners should be involved in the Suicide Squad to some extent, as this would be one way for Warner to set its DC Comics adaptations apart from what Marvel is doing.

Tonight, we celebrate Viola Davis’ historic achievement and look forward to the rest of the 2023 Grammy Awards, which will be handed out gradually over the course of the day. Congratulations to Viola Davis on her EGOT status!
