It is with heavy hearts that we must report the passing of Tre Evans-Dumaran, a 24-year-old firefighter who was swept away by flooding rains last week. Tre was sucked into a storm drain at Waiapo Street and carried about 800 yards to where it emptied out into the ocean. His mother, Chelsie Evans, has expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of love from the community during this difficult time.

Maui Mayor Richard Bissen offered his condolences to the family, noting that the community is “devastated” by the loss. He also highlighted the risks that emergency responders take to help others, looking out for the community they serve. Maui County Fire Chief Ventura echoed this sentiment, saying that the support for the firefighting community on Maui has been pouring in from around the islands and the globe.

Tre was a beloved member of the firefighting community and a natural at serving the community. His family has established a GoFundMe to help with expenses. They have requested privacy during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with the Evans-Dumaran family during this time of loss.
