When Jason Hutchinson caught someone on camera abandoning a dog at a gas station in southeast Houston on Friday, he knew he couldn’t just leave it behind. After seeing the dog tied to the pole, he took the dog with him and named it Storm. This story of compassion and kindness has gone viral on social media, with more than 11 million views on TikTok.

In the state of Texas, animals are considered property and abandoning them is against the law. The Houston SPCA has 10 animal cruelty investigators who take on cases often and encourage people to report animal cruelty if they see it. If you have an animal that you can no longer take care of, it’s your responsibility to find them a home.

Jason Hutchinson took on that responsibility himself. He said he felt like God put it in his heart to do something about it. His friend Carlos Valdez is currently caring for Storm until Hutchinson and Valdez find it a forever home.

The story of Storm is one of compassion and kindness, but it’s also a reminder of our responsibility to animals. We must take the time to find them a home if we can no longer take care of them, and always report animal cruelty if we see it.
