When life seems overwhelming and there seems to be no way out, the kindness of others can make all the difference. This was the case for a 17-year-old in Memphis, Tennessee, who was contemplating suicide when Officer Shaw of the Memphis Police Department came to the rescue.

The Memphis Police Department responded to a call Thursday night regarding a person on the edge of a bridge on Interstate 40. When Officer Shaw arrived, she found the 17-year-old standing on the outside ledge of the bridge. After talking with him, she discovered he was a new father and was feeling overwhelmed with the stress of life.

Officer Shaw, being a mother herself, was able to relate to the teen’s situation and shared her understanding with him. She also spoke to him for nearly 15 minutes, convincing him to hold on to her while helping him to safety. After he was pulled from the ledge, the two hugged and Officer Shaw told him that “Things will get better.”

The teen thanked the officer for being there and helping him. This story is a reminder of the power of compassion and understanding during times of distress. Officer Shaw’s actions are a testament to the fact that even the smallest act of kindness can make a world of difference.
