An alarming event has been taking place in the skies above America, and it’s been causing quite a stir. On Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, a suspected Chinese spy balloon was spotted hovering over Fairview, North Carolina, and it’s been slowly transitioning across the United States ever since. The balloon, which is reportedly flying at an altitude of 60,000 feet, is believed to have been launched from mainland China.

The Pentagon has considered taking down the possible threat from China, but ultimately decided against any action due to “the risk to safety and security of people on the ground from the possible debris field.” This has caused frustration from Republican lawmakers, who have expressed their concern over the Biden administration’s lack of communication about the balloon. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, for example, said in a tweet, “We have received zero communication from the Biden Administration regarding reports of the suspected Chinese spy balloon now flying over Missouri. We have heard no explanation or plan to remove it. Why has this been allowed to reach our heartland? Why has it not been eliminated?”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has indefinitely postponed a planned trip to China to meet President Xi Jinping in light of the circumstances. Senior State Department officials have also called the incident “unacceptable.”

It remains unclear whether the balloon is indeed a Chinese surveillance device, but it has certainly caused a stir among American officials. It’s important to keep an eye on the situation, as the balloon is still moving eastward over the U.S. and could potentially pose a threat to American airspace.
