Tragedy has struck the family of Edgar Garay, a 27-year-old man from Indiana. On January 29th, Edgar was on a recreational day trip to the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico when he fell off a 70-foot coastal cliff near the lighthouse in Cabo Rojo. His body was recovered the next day by a Puerto Rico Emergency Dive Unit.

Edgar’s brother, Carlos Garay, told CNN affiliate WTHR that his brother was a “daredevil” and was likely trying to make a video for TikTok when he was too close to the edge. In response to the tragedy, Carlos has set up a GoFundMe to cover the costs of transporting his brother’s body back to Indiana.

The US Coast Guard also expressed condolences to Edgar’s family in a news release. Captain José E. Díaz, Coast Guard Sector San Juan commander, said, “We express our most heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Edgar Garay and pray they find closure and strength during this most difficult time.” He also thanked the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Bureau dive unit for their efforts in locating Edgar’s body in such a difficult environment.

The death of Edgar Garay serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious in outdoor activities. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
