The Chinese spy balloon saga has been a hot topic in recent days, and Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., is the latest to weigh in. On Saturday, the House Armed Services Committee member called for President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to resign as a result of the incident.

Wilson’s comments came hours after a U.S. fighter jet shot down the unmanned surveillance aircraft off the coast of his home state of South Carolina. The balloon had flown from Alaska through Canada before entering the continental United States and traveling from Idaho to the East Coast over the last seven days.

“The catastrophic Chinese Spy Balloon spectacle clearly threatened American families from Alaska to my home community in South Carolina and confirms President Biden and Vice President Harris should resign,” Wilson said in a tweet. He added that their “open border policies” have weakened national security and that they are not capable of adequately responding to domestic attacks.

The Pentagon is now working to recover the balloon, which is expected to provide valuable intelligence. Several GOP lawmakers have slammed the Biden administration in recent days, characterizing the president’s response as weak. Rep. Russell Fry, another South Carolina Republican, told Fox News, “Why was this allowed to go clear across the country for so many days? You know, you look at this, national security is one of the biggest things that any country can do. It is a core function of government.”

President Biden has stated that he ordered the Pentagon to shoot down the balloon “as soon as possible” on Wednesday. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that, “in accordance with the President’s direction, the Department of Defense developed options to take down the balloon safely over our territorial waters, while closely monitoring its path and intelligence collection activities.”

The Chinese spy balloon saga is a troubling reminder of the importance of national security. As Rep. Joe Wilson has highlighted, the incident raises serious questions about the Biden administration’s response and capabilities, and it’s clear that more needs to be done to protect the American people.
