Is a Chinese Spy Balloon Lurking Over US Airspace?
As tensions between the US and China continue to rise, news broke recently that a suspected Chinese spy balloon was discovered flying in US airspace over Montana. The Chinese government has said they are looking into the reports, and Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has urged US officials and Chinese authorities to proceed “calmly and carefully” amid the investigation.
US Government Monitoring Suspected Chinese Spy Balloon
The US government is closely monitoring the high-altitude surveillance balloon, which is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground. According to a senior defense official, the government has been tracking it for “some time” and that it entered US airspace a “couple of days ago.”
The US is “confident” the surveillance balloon belongs to the People’s Republic of China, and is considering bringing it down using military assets. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to visit China on Friday, becoming the highest-ranking US official to visit the country since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
China Urges Calm
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has urged both US and Chinese authorities to proceed “calmly and carefully” amid the investigation, and that judgment should be withheld “before we have a clear understanding of the facts.”
As tensions between the US and China continue to grow, it is important that both sides proceed with caution and restraint. The US government is closely monitoring the situation, and the Chinese government is looking into the reports. We will have to wait and see what comes of this investigation.
