It’s a story that’s too incredible to be true, yet it happened. A woman in Iowa was pronounced dead, only to come back to life in the most unexpected of places.

On December 28th, 2022, a resident at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center was placed in hospice care and pronounced dead at 6am on January 3rd by a licensed practical nurse. A funeral director picked up the woman’s body, zipped her up in a cloth bag, and dropped her off at a funeral home and crematory within the hour.

But then, something miraculous happened. A funeral home employee unzipped the bag, saw the woman’s chest moving and the woman gasped for air. Medical workers were able to record a pulse and breathing from the woman, but there was no eye movement and no verbal response.

The woman was taken to a hospital and then back to the nursing home where she died less than two days later with her family at her side. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals issued two state violations to the nursing home totaling $10,000.

This unbelievable story serves as an important reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of double-checking when it comes to matters of life and death.
