It was a shocking moment that no one expected. A funeral home worker in Iowa got quite a surprise when a woman who was thought to have died suddenly came back to life.

According to a report from the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, a resident at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center was placed in hospice care and was pronounced dead by a licensed practical nurse. A funeral director was called to pick up the body and when they arrived, there were no signs of life. The body was zipped up in a cloth bag and taken to a funeral home and crematory.

That’s when the unexpected happened. A funeral home employee unzipped the bag and noticed the woman’s chest moving and then the woman gasped for air. Medical workers were able to record a pulse and breathing, but there was no eye movement and no verbal response.

The woman was taken to a hospital and then back to the nursing home where she died less than two days later with her family at her side. The Department of Inspections and Appeals issued two state violations to the nursing home totaling $10,000.

This incredible story of a woman who was thought to be dead coming back to life is a reminder of the fragility of life, and the importance of cherishing every moment.
