The Battle Over Targeting Women of Color: A Summary of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Raucous Speech

In a passionate and fiery speech on the House floor Thursday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., hit back at congressional Republicans in response to their vote to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Ocasio-Cortez declared that the GOP was “targeting women of color” with its vote.

The New York congresswoman wasn’t done there. She also accused the GOP of hypocrisy for elevating Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., to high-profile committee assignments despite her own history of controversial statements about Jewish people. Ocasio-Cortez then brought up a threat she received from a fellow member of Congress, Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., who was censured by Congress in 2021 for sharing a meme of anime cartoon characters killing one another that included AOC’s likeness.

Ocasio-Cortez’s speech was met with a flurry of criticism, with some of her critics taking issue with her invocation of color, noting that White men like Reps. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., had also been removed from their committees as Republicans took the majority.

In her speech, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the “disgusting” post-9/11 legacy of “targeting and racism against Muslim Americans throughout the United States of America.” She also condemned the GOP for their lack of consistency when it comes to condemning antisemitic remarks, citing the fact that Rep. Greene was elevated to high-profile committee assignments despite her own history of controversial statements about Jewish people.

The congresswoman ended her speech with a declaration that the GOP’s vote was “about targeting women of color in the United States of America!” before smacking a notebook against the lectern and walking off.

It’s clear that the battle over targeting women of color is far from over. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s passionate speech on the House floor Thursday serves as a reminder that the fight for equality and justice is still ongoing.
